Z-Axis (vertical) Manual Linear Translation Stages

Z-Axis (vertical) Manual Linear Translation Stages

Z-axis manual linear translation stages are designed to provide precise, high-resolution vertical travel over a single linear degree of freedom. More importantly, however, they constrain any form of movement in the other 5 degrees of freedom: pitch, yaw, roll, as well as x-, or y-axis translation.  There are three configurations of z-axis vertical travel stages differentiated by the orientations of their mounting platform and base.  1) vertical platform and base, 2) vertical platform/ horizontal base and, the most innovative, 3) horizontal platform and base. They are frequently used in applications such as microscopy, metrology, optical fiber alignment, optical delay lines, interferometry, or wherever exact linear position is required.  Industries that utilize linear stages include research, bio-medical, life sciences, astronomy, metrology, semiconductor, and more.  OptoSigma offers the largest selection of z-axis linear translation stages to meet virtually any application.  For example,  we have the most bearing options of any manufacturer, including  EXC™ precision bearing, ball bearing, crossed-roller bearing, and dovetail bearing.   If one of our many catalog z stages does not meet your requirements, send us a request for a custom stage.  OptoSigma is, after all, the industry leader in translation stages.

Understanding Our Z-Axis (vertical travel) Stage Offering

OptoSigma offers three main types of z-axis, vertical-travel stages, each providing different orientations of its mounting surfaces.  Z stages have two mounting surfaces: one that is movable and one fixed.  The movable surface provides mounting for the object that needs to be aligned or positioned. The fixed surface (or base) mounts to a work surface like a breadboard or optical table.

Each of these surfaces is oriented either horizontally or vertically and, likewise, our stages are grouped into one of three categories shown below:

  • Horizontal Mounting Surface /Horizontal Base
  • Vertical Mounting Surface /Horizontal Base (part number suffix: “L”)
  • Vertical Mounting Surface /Vertical Base (part number suffix: “Z”)

Use this selection guide to identify the z-axis stage that best suits your application need.
