Optical Posts and Bases

An important element of the optomechanics line up are the mounting posts and bases.  While these are simple parts, they provide an important function for an optical mounts - connection to the work surface.  There are two main types of mounting posts: fixed-height and height-adjustable.  The fixed-height posts provide the most stability simply because there are no moving parts.  The most widely used fixed post type are called pedestals due to their wide base.  Pedestal posts require a clamp fork to mount to an optical table.  Standard post and post holders provide manual height adjustment and are comprised of a post holder and a post which fits inside of the post holder.  This arrangement allows for height adjustment as well as rotation adjustment (yaw).  Post holders have threaded bottoms to allow mounting directly to the threaded holes on an optical table.  While this mounting is convenient, it restricts the location of a post holder to one of the threaded holes on the optical table; note that pedestal posts do not have this limitation due to the fork clamp mounting.  For a post holder, this limitation can be overcome with the addition of a mounting base which enables fork-like mounting.   Optomechanics are used in one way or another in every optical application or experiment.  Although OptoSigma has thousands of these components,  if one of our many catalog items does not meet your requirements, send us a request for a custom version.

  • Posts and Holders

    Description

    Posts, (Or Rods), provide a simple means for mounting optical components. These posts are 1/2 inch in diameter and incorporate precision machined features which make them more convenient to use. Half inch diameter stainless steel posts are machined with a 1/4-20 or M6 female thread on one end and an 8-32 or M4 female thread on the other. They may be stud mounted to a wide variety of component holders. A 4mm clearance hole through the middle of the post provides for the use of a torque bar for tightening. Post collars are offered separately to hold the posts at a preset height. Post holders are made from aluminum and are equipped with a spring-loaded clamp screw to hold the post in position. The base of the post holders is fitted with a 1/4-20 or M6 female thread for attachment to a variety of bases. An adjustable height post holder provides 10mm of vertical adjustment which is actuated by the rotation of a knurled ring.

  • Pedestal Pillars

    Description

    OptoSigma Pedestal Pillars provide a strong and secure method for mounting optic mounts or various opto-mechanics.  A range of different component holders can be attached to the top of the pedestals by means of a screw. Pedestals are made of stainless steel for sturdy, fixed height mounting of sensitive components.  Three different sizes are available to affix the various sizes of optics mounts. The vacuum compatible version comes, clean and vacuum packed for drop in use.

    Description

    These 1.5 inch diameter damped steel rods provide a very stable and vibration free method of mounting laser components. Both the rods and the mounts are compatible with most existing rod mount systems. Our mounts incorporate precision adjustment mechanisms which are easy to use yet very stable once set. The tilt mount is made to accept a range of replaceable mirror holders.   • Spacer Plates

    Description

    Spacer plates are necessary allowing users to increase in height (thickness of the stages). Various thicknesses are available. Spacer plates are needed when mounting a smaller stage on top of a large stage or vice versa. These spacers are made from aluminum or brass and are precision machined. A variety of Right-Angle Brackets are also available for bolting two stages together.

    Description

    OptoSigma angle brackets are made from aluminum or brass with precision machining to ensure orthogonal alignment of stages and other items bolted to their mounting faces.
