Motorized Actuators

Our motorized actuators provide a means to automate or enable remote actuation for our manual stages or mounts.  Several types are available, such as the low-cost DC motor actuators, high-precision stepper motor actuators, and also our new, high-sensitivity piezomotor actuators.  For special vacuum environments, we have both ultra-sonic actuators and piezomotor actuators.  These motorized actuators are available in different travel ranges to enable a variety of different applications.  Motorized actuators  are frequently used in applications such as microscopy, metrology, optical fiber alignment, interferometry, or wherever automated submicron positioning is required.  Industries that utilize motorized actuators include research, bio-medical, life sciences, astronomy, metrology, semiconductor, and more.  Controllers are available in single or multiaxis versions.  If one of our many catalog motorized actuators does not meet your requirements, just send us a request for a custom version.

  • Compact continuous (DC) motorized actuators

    Description

    The SGCD low-cost DC motor actuators are open-loop and intended for simple automated or remote movement of linear stages or other precision positioners.   Even with their amazingly small diameter (about the size of a felt-tipped highlighter) they have thrust load capacities up to 7kgf. 

  • Compact stepping motorized actuators

    Description

    Our SGSP stepper motor actuators are also open-loop but are fitted with precise origin/ limit sensors which provide repeatability to 3µm. They are deceptively compact, having a cross-section of 20X20 mm. 

  • Encoded DC Actuator System

    Description

    The RMH actuator provides excellent 2µm repeatability owing to its built-in rotary encoder.  A dedicated 2-axis controller is available to provide either computer or joystick control of the actuators.

  • Silent Ultrasonic Actuators

    Description

    These actuators have high resolution and high speed (0.5mm/sec) but are known for their silent operation.  High thrust force is achieved through an ultra-low friction ball screw assembly.  Position is held with friction even when the power is off.  These actuators can be used to automate manual stages by replacing manual micrometer heads (travel: 13mm).  If one of our many catalog actuators does not meet your requirements, just send us a request for a custom one. 

  • High-Resolution Piezomotor Actuators

    Description

    Our piezomotor actuators are compact and provide extremely high-resolution incremental movement, as low as 20nm.  The motion of these actuators relies on the structured, high-speed "vibration" of a piezo stack along with the force difference between the friction of a moving object (dynamic) vs. friction of a non-moving object (static). Recall that that friction on a non-moving object is higher than that of moving friction.   In the motion process, the piezo is expanded slowly, enabling higher static friction, and this makes the screw rotate in a direction.  Then, the piezo is retracted very quickly, for lower static friction such that the screw does not rotate.  Applying this process repeatedly at a high rate causes the actuator screw to rotate continuously in a particular direction. Simply reversing the order of the fast and slow piezo expansion/retraction changes the direction of rotation, allowing the screw to move in the opposite direction.  One of the key benefits of piezomotor actuation is that the static friction, which is in effect when the piezomotor is not operating, also acts like a locking mechanism which ensures excellent stability.  Our PDM piezo actuators are available in two travel ranges, 13- and 6.5-mm and have industry-standard 9.5-mm and 6-mm diameter mounting interfaces allowing them to be drop-in replacements for standard micrometers.  They also have ball-tip or flat-tip options.  Another convenient feature of these actuators is that the electrical cable is conveniently removable.  Please note that these actuators do not have internal feedback and therefore are open-loop.  Vacuum compatible versions are also available.  If your application needs different specifications we can customize our piezomotor actuators to your unique requirements.

Ultrasonic Actuators

 

The PKA ultrasonic actuator provides silent actuation in an exceptionally short form factor (only 50mm exposed length).  Its maximum speed is 5X faster than the similar-sized piezomotor actuators.  PKA actuators are available in a vacuum-compatible version.
