Infrared (IR) Lenses are used for wavelengths beyond the visible spectrum, but some materials also transmit in the visible region. Calcium Fluoride (CaF2) and sapphire are 2 such materials, but ZnSe also transmits in the upper visible (red) range which can facilitate alignment with a HeNe laser. Germanium (Ge) and Silicon (Si) are opaque to all visible wavelengths, but is a popular materials for use out to 20 microns. ZnSe is very popular for mid-wave IR (MIR) and far IR applications.
