Optical Tables & Breadboards

Optical Table and Breadboard products are designed to provide a large, vibration isolated and damped work surface from which to conduct optical experiments.  An optical table consists of two main items: a support and an optical tabletop or breadboard.  The support can be in the form of a frame with casters or as four individual cylindrical legs.  The supports can be either elastomeric (rigid) with nominal vibration isolation or pneumatic, which provides the best isolation from floor vibrations.  The tabletop has a matrix of 1/4-20 or M6 threaded holes on the surface and is constructed with a steel honeycomb structure to make it stiff, but with minimal mass.   • Pneumatically Isolated Optical Tables

    Description

    Pneumatic Optical Tables (sometimes called air tables) employ pressurized air supports which provide better isolation from floor vibrations compared to rigid supports.  The pneumatic supports can be in the form of a frame with casters or as four individual cylindrical legs.  All of our pneumatic optical tables are able to automatically level themselves to gravity if eccentrically loaded. An air compressor is needed to operate a pneumatic optical table. As with all tables, the tabletop has a matrix of 1/4-20 or M6 threaded holes on the surface and is constructed with a steel honeycomb structure to make it stiff, with minimal mass. Our standard working surface height is about 3 feet but can be adjusted or customized.   • Elastomerically Isolated Optical Tables

    Description

    Our elastomerically isolated (sometimes referred to as rigid) optical tables employ supports with structured rubber pads, which provide nominal isolation from floor vibrations.  The rigid supports can be in the form of a frame with casters or as four individual cylindrical legs.   No air compressor is needed to operate rigid optical tables.  As with all tables, the tabletop has a matrix of 1/4-20 or M6 threaded holes on the surface and is constructed with a steel honeycomb structure to make it stiff, with minimal mass.   • Optical Breadboards and Tabletops

    Description

    Optical tabletops and breadboards  provide a large, damped work surface from which to conduct optical experiments.  The term table top and breadboard can be used interchangeably but, generally speaking, table tops are larger with thicknesses of 200mm and higher whereas breadboards are smaller with thicknesses of 100mm or less. table tops typically need some type of mounting structure or support, which can be either rigid with nominal vibration isolation or pneumatic, which provides the best isolation from floor vibrations.  The table top has a matrix of 1/4-20 or M6 threaded holes on the surface and is constructed with a steel honeycomb structure to make it stiff, but with minimal mass. The vibration damping of our table tops is classified as broadband, covering a wider range of frequencies.   • Overhead Shelfs

    Description

    Overhead optical table shelf systems maximize lab space by providing an easily-accessible shelf directly above the table surface for electronic equipment typically used for an optical experiment.  The shelf is made for equipment like laser power supplies, motorized stage controllers, oscilloscopes, computers, and other instruments like power meters. Abundant electrical outlets are mounted on both sides of the overhead shelf allowing easy access to power. These overhead shelves are free standing and do not make contact with any part of the optical table This ensures that fan vibrations from the instruments on the shelves do not reach the table surface. They are made from formed and welded steel with a black powder coat finish. Leveling feet and casters are included for easy mobility and stability on uneven floors.   • Desk-Type Systems

    Description

    Desk-type vibration isolation systems are an all-in-one lab workstation with both an integrated workspace and an inset vibration isolated breadboard working surface. These work stations have a pneumatic isolation system which provides automatic leveling.  The ergonomic design and cleanroom options make it the ideal product for applications in microscopy or other life science related research.   • Active Vibration Isolation Systems

    Description

    Active vibration isolation systems are made to sit atop an optical table or work station to proactively detect and isolate vibrations from affecting the work surface. They consist of a spring, feedback, and feed-forward control algorithm with vibration sensors and actuators.  The feedback control algorithm uses sensors that continuously measure vibrations originating from the floor or the from the payload, and sends signals to the actuators to cancel out the vibration.   Applications for desk top active vibration isolation platforms include atomic force microscopy, fluorescence microscopy, scanning probe microscopy, 3D optical microscopy, optical microscopy with nanometer resolution,  digital holographic microscopy, stylus profilometry, interferometry, surface roughness metrology.

  • Optical Table Accessories

    Description

    Key accessories are needed to complete the setup of an optical table or breadboard.  Most importantly for any of the pneumatic optical tables is an air compressor.  It provides 100+ PSI air pressure needed to float the table and activate its vibration-isolation properties.  Bubble levels are also needed to ensure the table top surface is adjusted to be orthogonal to gravity.  Rubber isolators are needed with breadboards to isolate  them from, or attenuate environmental vibrations.
